“Animal Village is an inspiring story that teaches us perseverance and the value
of working together. What is true in the animal village equally holds for our
global village.”
Benita Ferrero-Waldner,
European Commissioner for Trade and European Neighborhood Policy,
United Nations Chief of Protocol, and Foreign Minister of Austria“In her book, Animal Village, such mighty lessons Nelda LaTeef teaches the young and those of us who are not so young. Listen to the ‘old stories’ passed down from ‘the ancestors;’ it is always better to pull together rather than stand against each other; keep at a task until it is done; and everything is possible, by and by.”
Johnnetta Betsch Cole,
Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art
From the Zarma people of West Africa comes Animal Village, an authentic folk tale about a tortoise who saves her village from the ravages of drought with wisdom passed down from an ‘old story.’
Author/Illustrator Nelda LaTeef heard the tale from a griot (storyteller) in the Republic of Niger, and she created a picture book that introduces the culture of the Zarma and the sub-Saharan region of Africa to children around the world. The story is especially relevant to sub-Saharan Africa as it focuses on the devastation of drought and the importance of received knowledge. With its dual themes of wisdom and grit, the book happily entertains while it teaches the importance of hard work and persistence as keys to success.
LaTeef’s brilliant and strikingly vivid montage of illustrations done in acrylic, Indian ink, colored paper, and collage on art board captures the richness and vibrancy of the sub-Saharan culture from which the story springs.
Animal Village includes an Author’s Note about the geography and culture of the Zarma people, and a map of Africa accompanied by fascinating facts about the African continent.
Nelda LaTeef has lived, traveled, and studied extensively in Africa. She is the author of The Hunter and the Ebony Tree, which was translated in Italian, Gaelic and Korean and received the Storytelling World Honor Award. The story was included in Around the World with Historical Fiction and Folktales: Highly Recommended and Award Winning as well as in Representing Africa in Children’s Literature, Old and New Ways of Seeing. LaTeef’s illustrations were showcased at the Society of Illustrators in New York and the McLean Project for the Arts. A cum laude graduate of Harvard
University, she lives with her family in Great Falls, Virginia.
